WHISKEY PETE MC (Los Angeles)

I’ve been trying to figure out when I first met Pete. I think it was back in ‘03 or ‘04. I’m glad to say we’ve become close over the years and since we first met I’ve seen Jacob Peter Brown McGowin aka Whiskey Pete progress with his style of emceeing and perfect his ability to bring the party to you. I don’t even know where to begin on how much he’s done over the years because there’s so much. I must say, over this past year he’s been making some major moves as an emcee and getting his name on just about everything. This guy is literally EVERYWHERE! LA local and resident of two weeklies, Trust Saturdays and House Fridays, this guy is making things happen and changing the vibe of the party with every breath. If you’ve already been turned on to him or if you’re a first time listener, boy do I have a treat for you…
I’ve got Whiskey Pete’s first ever interview and I’m really happy to be able to present it to all of you. This is going to give you a great idea of where this guy is coming from and what we have in store next month at our show with Artifakt. If you’re another blog feel free to take this interview and put it on your page. I would actually love for you to help spread the word. Just please link where you got it. Thanks!

FB: What was your background like musically growing up?
WP: Well when I was younger the alternative rock boom happened so when I was in elementary school and stuff my older brother was bumping Guns n Roses, Pearl jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers etc so I kinda just tried to be like him. I played the drums as well and by the time I hit jr high Hip-hop took over my life. Then soon after that came my love for Drum and bass/jungle and for the most part that’s what I grew up listening to.
FB: You started out as an Drum and Bass MC, correct? What made you want to switch over to the 4/4?
WP: Yeah well I first started rapping to Hip Hop which I still think is the most proper way to get into emceeing but that transitioned me into emceeing to Drum and bass. After emceeing to Drum and bass for many years I started emceeing to breaks and that’s how I kinda got exposed to electro. I got the same feeling about electro that I had when I first heard drum and bass and that feeling is excitement. I just kept hearing more and more artists and producers that I was really into and it just started a snowball effect. I was completely drawn to the music and I knew I wanted to rap over it. There really wasn’t anyone else doing it here in the states so I was like ima do this!

FB: How would you describe the LA scene to someone that’s never been there? From what I can see things are blowing up down there but that’s nothing new, right?
WP: Yeah man we are def spoiled down here. The amount of events and parties that go on is insane. There’s something to do every night of the week and sometimes its actually hard to pick what to do. There is always top notch talent coming through so I’ve been lucky enough to see and play alongside some amazing acts.
FB: Popping Bottles like it’s going out of style, huh? Do you think you’d win in a battle with me? Haha, wouldn’t that be a site to see….
WP: Haha – You and I in a drinking competition can only end bad cause were both a bunch of crazy ass fools but u know I’m down for the challenge!
FB: What’s your favorite venue to MC/Host at and why?
WP: Kinda hard to narrow it down to one venue. As long as the system is good, the crowd is feeling it and I’m connecting and vibin with the dj then I’m happy.
FB: What style of 4/4 do you enjoy emceeing over the most and if you could name one or two DJ/Producers out there, who do you think you flow the best with?
WP: I love rapping over “fidget” cause its bouncy and fun and it really gets people going. Its a lil more emcee friendly to. I can pretty much get down to all styles though for the most part and I’d like to think I’m pretty diverse when it comes to that. I don’t really have a certain dj I play with exclusively but I do have a residency with Reid Speed on Fridays in Hollywood and I have had a lot of fun playing with her recently. A few that stand out in my mind that I’ve also had fun playing with are Villains, True Pseudo, LA Riots, B.Rich, Klever, Tommie Sunshine, Santiago and Bushido, Hijack, Kelevra, After Midnight and there’s a lot more DJs out there that I’ve had the pleasure of playin with.
FB: This kind of goes with the last question. Name your favorite producers in and out of LA and who should we watch out for in 2009/10?
WP: Oh this is hard to answer cause there is so much talent out there and I can’t narrow it down to just LA but a few of my favorite producers are: Crookers, Fake Blood, Laidback Luke, Villains, Jack Beats and LA Riots. I think you should def keep a watch out for what True Pseudo, The American Dream Team, After Midnight, Audio Stalkers, Bird Peterson, Tommie Sunshine, Gigi Barocco, 12th planet and Nonewyork are gonna be doing this year as well. I could list off a ton more but this is who comes to mind of the top of the head right now.

FB: What are your plans for the future? What do you have forthcoming and what if any, side projects do you have going on?
WP: I just had a new release today on beatport called “Jak Muzik” and that was a track I did with Kelevra on a new label called Fidget Kingdom. It comes with remixes from Mickey Slim, Aniki, Jamie Fanatic and Klaus Hill and I also have a release on Palms Out Sounds this month with B. Rich. I have future releases lined up with PBR, We Are All Kids, Illeven Eleven, Shush, Sick Recordings, Promo and a few others. I’ve been working with a lot of different producers so be on the lookout for new stuff with Dj Bam Bam, Kue, Aniki, Defunct, Gigi Barocco, Villains, Kelevra and Jamie Fanatic, Deviant Soundsystem, B. Rich, Audio Stalkers, General Midi, Keith Mackenzie, Calvertron, True Pseudo, Danny Sounds and Joey C, Neonstereo, Jeff T and a few more. Also keep an eye out for Monster Squad. Monster Squad is a group I started with two of my emcee homies Andre Parnell aka MC Dre and Jae Stylus. All the production is handled by my good friend The American Dream Team so make sure to look out for the myspace page launching soon! Ive been really busy so far this yeah so I’m def exited about all the new things that will be comin out.
FB: We’re bring you out to Seattle for your first time in May for our show w/ Computer Club. What can we expect from you and if you could say anything to the Seattle scene what would it be?
WP: It will be my first time there so I’m stoked about playing for new people at a new spot and being able to cut it up with some old friends at the same time. What to expect from me? From me you should just expect high energy and party rockin raps that make people wanna party hard, dance and have a good time! haha.
